It was Walt Disney's masterpiece, bringing together all the studio's magic - animation, live action, special effects, storytelling, and music.

It's been an exciting part of collecting animation art to build my POPPINS collection. No matter how many pieces I have, there always seems to be "just one more" that I must have... and the collection continues to grow.

I recently acquired an original production cel of a horse from the animated "fox hunt" sequence. This is really quite a find - I've never seen another like it.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 244px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SRZEryUkcOI/AAAAAAAAFs8/lV-jpXD9dzk/s320/POPPINS_horse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266472333289484514" />
When I am offered a cel, I always go to the film to find the key frame in which the cel appears. Here's the horse's key frame:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 193px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SRZIhWEvEHI/AAAAAAAAFtk/avMCbHC-Znw/s320/poppinsHORSE.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266476551954698354" />
So... the horse originally had a hunter.Finding the matched hunter production cel is unlikely at best.

What to do?

I asked my restoration artist (who was "ink and paint" trained at Disney) if she could recreate the Hunter overlay cel. She not only recreated the cel, but used a special technique to make her hand-inking look like Xerox lines! It's just briliiant, and so is she. Of course, we agreed the word "re-creation" should be hand-inked at the bottom of the cel, and it was. (Due to image cropping you can't see it here.) Here's the beautiful new Hunter cel:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 205px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SRZEsKt4qDI/AAAAAAAAFtE/m2e8XSno28k/s320/HunterOverlay.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266472339838117938" />
The next step was to layer the cels together. Here's how the Horse and Hunter look together... re-united after forty years!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 269px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SRZEsayvRMI/AAAAAAAAFtM/mqm5VZqfsQY/s320/POPPINShorse2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266472344153441474" />
The setup would be incomplete without a digitally re-assembled key master background, which I created.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 207px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SRZEs4kpyxI/AAAAAAAAFtU/gVSPbq4-AS4/s320/BG_PoppinsHorse.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5266472352147426066" />
I think you'll agree, the end result (pictured at the beginning of this post) is a tremendous setup, worth all the time and effort.

More MARY POPPINS: Penguins and Barnyard Birds!

Disneyland's Art Corner saved many wonderful cels, and decades after it closed it still provides an ongoing source of artwork for animation art collectors.

Here's a delightful setup with two cels from MARY POPPINS, from different scenes! I have a large collection of original POPPINS cels. But in over a decade of collecting, I've never seen any cels of the barnyard sequence animals. So I jumped on this!

Typical of Art Corner setups which were literally just thrown together (and sold for about a dollar apiece!), this has a completely unrelated print background from SLEEPING BEAUTY! Sorry for the flash glare - I didn't take the photo.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SK46rizNPdI/AAAAAAAADis/8_N5IUegp6U/s400/bf9e_1.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237187936428834258" />
When I saw this setup, of course I immediately went to the DVD and found the key frames:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SK46rv0OSUI/AAAAAAAADi0/NSoNONHdHwA/s400/PoppinsFarmCapSm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237187939922757954" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SK46sMyk2zI/AAAAAAAADi8/s_WbJ7OWFZk/s400/4pengsCapSm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5237187947700476722" />
I then digitally created two new, separate master backgrounds, so the cels can be set up separately. OK, technically, BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS was released in 1971, but it was in production in the sixties.)

I actually have two "fish" cels from the "Beautiful Briny Sea" number in BEDKNOBS AND BROOMSTICKS. That segment combining live action and animation is a knockout. (Did you know the music was a "trunk song," left over from MARY POPPINS?)

The newest acquisition has the left two fish. Here's how the cel looked when I got it, bad mat and all.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SCJjVbd29yI/AAAAAAAACMs/gEkSUlwTXyQ/s200/BrinyFish2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197826139740370722" />
It is one of those mysterious cels that matches the sequence but doesn't appear in the film. (Cutting room floor?)

It was unfortunately severely trimmed by the previous owner. I re-created the background with the empty shell on the left, but I retained a pose of the right side fish I liked. Here's the digitally composited background:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SCJj8rd29zI/AAAAAAAACM0/NlxlM0XR0Y4/s200/BG_fish2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197826814050236210" />In the finished setup, all three fish are swimming along together, once again. I now can have a "Beautiful Briny Sea" cel at home and in my dressing room at Hollywood's El Capitan theatre!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SCJkabd290I/AAAAAAAACM8/yhrowE34UHs/s200/BrinyFish2setup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197827325151344450" />Another childhood favorite was THE SWORD AND THE STONE. While it may not hold up quite as well as some other Disney features, it has some good moments, especially the wizards' duel, and the squirrel sequence where
the little girl squirrel gets all "twitterpated" about young "Wart" as a squirrel.

I acquired this cel earlier this year.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SCJlmbd291I/AAAAAAAACNE/-K8JZrZ2Iik/s200/SWORDsquirrels.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197828630821402450" />This was one of those B/Gs where the characters never completely clear the B/G. When this happens, I hand paint the character's edges in Photoshop, so when the cel is placed on the re-created B/G, the ink/Xerox lines don't show. What's behind the cel isn't crucial because it's covered. (I'm giving away my secrets here!) I only do this when it's impossible to recreate the entire B/G. Sometimes I'll leave 2-3 cel points so I can exactly place the cel as it appears in the film. With
the squirrels, I kept Wart's hand (paw?), his eye area, and part of his tail. In this way the cel can be perfectly positioned. It was a tight shot. The Art Corner cel (released as a souvenir at Disneyland) was (as often is the case) heavily trimmed.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SCJnabd294I/AAAAAAAACNc/A8Tdm9IJgPA/s200/MIM_02cel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197830623686227842" />
Here's the digitally recreated key master background:<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SCJoFrd295I/AAAAAAAACNk/VLiPiYy4VD0/s200/BG_MimHotSize.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197831366715570066" />And finally the finished setup with laserprint B/G. You can clearly see where the trimmed cel sits on the finished B/G. I haven't decided exactly how I'll mat this. I thought I'd leave the scan "as is," uncropped, so you can see the entire piece.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/SCJozrd296I/AAAAAAAACNs/a1zFVZrSVrc/s200/MIMprettySetup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5197832156989552546" />
All in all, a very good day's work for the animation art form and my collection!

Art Corner Restorations: Pete & Donald

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R-RzjKxdnzI/AAAAAAAABrA/cRGQJnbrK1s/s400/PETE_TboneSetUp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180392519407345458" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R-R2k6xdn4I/AAAAAAAABro/oUKS7Q34MK8/s200/DD_Math_Setup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180395848006999938" />
Ah, the magical, mystical Art Corner. Long ago, it was Disneyland's dispatch center for thousands of vintage Disney cels, where you could buy original Disney artwork as a souvenir!

The Art Corner setups were often very puzzling - unlikely characters from completely different movies thrown together, with non-matching print backgrounds.

The cels were trimmed (often badly). I'm sure the idea was, the smaller the trim job, the smaller the mat... less cost! And the mats were not top-of-the-line to begin with!

All this showed how little regard was given to the actual artwork. It was making movies that was the thing... the artwork was just a part of the process, thought relatively worthless once photographed.

But thank God Disney sold these at the Art Corner instead of hauling them to the dump. Little did anyone know at the time, they were saving a significant portion of animation history.

As a collector, I find the Art Corner pieces intriguing for many reasons. Not least is the fact that you could buy hand-painted original Disney artwork for a dollar! (Occasionally slightly more. The very high end pieces I'm told were five dollars. That was for large setups with multiple characters.)

As a collector, I also enjoy saving pieces of animation history that might otherwise end up lost.

Such is today's story of Pete and Donald.

When I acquired this two-cel setup it was a mess. It had just about every problem possible. Cracking and missing paint plus major adhering problems. Not only was the bottom cel (Pete) adhered to the colored art board B/G (a common malady), Donald (the top cel) had adhered to the top of Pete. Specifically, the colored paint on the back of Donald's cel had adhered to Pete's ink lines on the top of his cel.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R-R1V6xdn3I/AAAAAAAABrg/WZSIV3YD28o/s320/DonaldandPete.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180394490797334386" />
As I said, this was a mess. A big mess.

But the beautiful thing about cel restoration (done properly) is it can bring back damaged art. Even as bad than this!

The cels went to my talented restoration artist. And I began my research.

The Donald cel was immediately recognizable from DONALD IN MATHMAGICLAND. I digitally re-created the key master B/G.

As for the Pete cel, it's from interstitial material from "Donald's Award." Walt created his TV animation in color. Some of it was filmed in both color and black and white. Maybe someday the color version will surface and we'll see it.

In the meantime, the black and white version is on YouTube. Take a look!

The restorations turned out beautifully. But even more mind-boggling, my artist friend Kathy is capable of painting stunning reproduction key master backgrounds in every Disney style and from all eras.

I sent Kathy these screen grabs.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R-Rw3axdnxI/AAAAAAAABqw/RRcKKISS8m8/s200/PeteTrombone2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180389568764813074" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R-Rw3qxdnyI/AAAAAAAABq4/Jbbv4clJ86U/s200/PeteTrombone4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180389573059780386" />
Using her imagination, she concocted the dandy custom B/G (and its color palette) for Pete. Fantastic!

Two wonderful pieces of vintage animation art are now restored with key master background presentations.

Is this a great hobby or what??!!!

CRUELLA

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R9Y0HeMzirI/AAAAAAAABig/6sj0nWbWKdw/s400/CruellaSetupB.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176382124679465650" />
Pictured here, the finished setup of Cruella DeVil, one of the greatest animated villains of all time. Mark Davis was the Disney artist who brought her to life. He animated every frame of this character, a Disney first.

Here is the cel, originally released by the Art Corner at Disneyland. Great pose, beautiful colors. Imagine getting this for a dollar!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R9Y0yOMziuI/AAAAAAAABi4/SzJwtBVDoIY/s200/CruellaCel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176382859118873314" />Unfortunately I was about 30 years late for an Art Corner bargain. But I was still delighted to add this to my animation art collection in January 2008. I purchased it from the good folks at the Van Eaton Gallery in Sherman Oaks, CA. They are great people, with a staggering array of artwork from which you can choose. They are knowledgeable and friendly, and their prices are very fair. The Van Eaton Gallery gets my highest recommendation. When in the Los Angeles area stop by and tell 'em Rob Richards sent you!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R9Y3j-MzivI/AAAAAAAABjA/ui_Ya5KhCu8/s200/CruellaSetup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176385912840620786" />Van Eaton's presentation had cleverly set up the cel with a laserprint of a background layout drawing of Roger and Anita's living room. It was quite nice. But ever the perfectionist, I wanted my setup with a digitally recreated key master B/G from the movie. And fortunately I knew just the guy to do it... me!

With the key master B/G recreated, Cruella was carefully positioned, and the cel now precisely recreates the exact frame in the movie. With one exception... the new setup actually lets us see more of the cel than we did in the movie!
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R9Y4O-MziwI/AAAAAAAABjI/8rF-hqdoMyA/s200/CruellaSetupA.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5176386651574995714" />

More POPPINS PENGUINS with DONALD DUCK!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R80Dbod0hAI/AAAAAAAABgQ/wIlpIqAzZfE/s200/DDpeng3sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173795320172413954" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R80Db4d0hBI/AAAAAAAABgY/4GXuGy0md9o/s200/DDpeng4sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173795324467381266" />
Last year, I was delighted and surprised to find two Disneyland Art Corner original animation cel setups, featuring the unlikely pairings of Donald Duck (from the film AMERICA AND STEEL, 1963) and penguins from MARY POPPINS (1964).

These came from separate sources but appeared within days of each other! Simply unbelievable.

The likelihood of this ever happening again was absolutely impossible. Right? Wrong!

I recently received an email from a very thoughtful fellow who discovered me via my animation blogs. He'd found some original Disney cels at an estate sale, tucked in between some old vinyl records. He asked if I had any interest in them. You better believe I answered that email quickly!

I made an offer, he accepted, and the deal was done. The cels arrived today. They are absolutely mint. No restoration needed (rather unusual for cels over 40 years old). These look like they were painted yesterday! Even the clear plastic cel material (on which the art is painted) is flawless, without any rippling or shrinking so often seen on pieces like this.

Typical of Art Corner setups, the color print backgrounds provided are totally non-key, from unrelated films. The pine tree B/G is from PAUL BUNYAN and the wintry B/G is from 101 DALMATIANS! Not to worry, I am at work on digitally reconstructing the key Master backgrounds for each individual cel.

Art Corner setups included the official "Gold Seal" certificate of authenticity affixed to the back of the artwork. Here's the Gold Seal from the Donald/Penguin with the "Paul Bunyan" background:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R_Mh-Kxdo5I/AAAAAAAABzw/HCqnhLXus3E/s200/DD_bunyanCOA.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184524947960996754" />

Perhaps the most amazing thing is the original Disneyland price, handwritten in pencil on one of these setups - $1.50! Oh, if only I had a time machine...

The Art Corner presentations as originally released by Disneyland are pictured above. Below, the the cels' actual corresponding moments in their respective films. Don't forget to click on the photos to see the larger versions with more detail.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R80EDId0hCI/AAAAAAAABgg/elLf-DjQKUg/s200/A.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173795998777246754" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R80EDId0hDI/AAAAAAAABgo/gDZbeQrFLFA/s200/B.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5173795998777246770" />
And finally... the cel setups with their new digitally re-created key backgrounds:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R_Mj5axdo6I/AAAAAAAABz4/Sgwsyw0Y7j8/s200/MaryAndPenguinSm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184527065379873698" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R_Mj5qxdo7I/AAAAAAAAB0A/vzKZKGLEWbU/s200/BertAndPengsSm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184527069674841010" />

SHERE KHAN (The Jungle Book)

This special setup from THE JUNGLE BOOK is a true collector's prize. Shere Khan cels are very rare.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R6f5hF1vgMI/AAAAAAAABDM/yqgB7Ni1_Ow/s400/ShereKhanSetup.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163369844702150850" />
The original Art Corner cel was in pretty rough shape. Cel paint was cracked, some missing, and the original piece had a yellow art board background that had obviously received some water damage. Professional restoration brought back the stunning beauty of the image.

Here's a comparison montage of the cel, before and after restoration:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R6f5JF1vgLI/AAAAAAAABDE/p9T0IeaZM3k/s400/ShereKhanBefore.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163369432385290418" />
The original frame in the movie looks like this:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R6f4yV1vgKI/AAAAAAAABC8/qd-hhBh_UT4/s400/ShereKhanCap.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5163369041543266466" />
The re-created background was created successfully for this presentation, even though it is one of those that couldn't be completely finished, as Shere Khan doesn't completely move out of center. The small "unrestored" area (maybe 5% of the total image, in the lower center) is of course hidden behind the cel. (The finished setup is the image at the very beginning of this post.)

POPPINS PENGUINS and DONALD DUCK too (2)!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5rF4l1vfrI/AAAAAAAAA_E/xJFcpBEJ_SU/s400/bothDDpengs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159653899127193266" />
As you know, I like to say "every cel has a story to tell." This post documents many aspects of the excitement of cel collecting. Each phase of acquisition, restoration, and setup has its great moments.

In early 2007, I was able to obtain not one but two separate original Art Corner cel releases, featuring Mary Poppins' dancing penguins paired with Donald Duck cels from "America and Steel" (a 1963 industrial Disney edutainment film with live action and animation segments with Donald). As was the practice at the time, the cels were trimmed and stapled to plain pieces of colored art board.

The dancing penguins are among the most treasured of Poppins' animation art. How lucky I was to acquire two at virtually the same time! Here they are, close-up and side by side. The left penguin was mint, needing no restoration. The right penguin had paint "bleeding." It almost seems the art board leeches the paint away from the cel. You can see the cel paint outside the cel lines. This required minor restoration (clean up). <img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5rHwF1vfsI/AAAAAAAAA_M/ls3YXd4z1is/s400/PENGUINS_comp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159655952121560770" />
Next... here are the the Art Corner cels and their respective frames in each movie:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5v5qF1vftI/AAAAAAAAA_U/DRakySKYphs/s400/3a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159992299600445138" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5v5qV1vfuI/AAAAAAAAA_c/hp1NUi85lDs/s400/3b.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159992303895412450" />
The Art Corner pieces were in varying conditions. On the "red B/G setup" the little Penguin on the top cel layer was carefully peeled away, completely intact and original, perfect and needing no repairs. Donald's cel paint had severely adhered to the art board (very common). This prevents adding a background. However, the paint remained original and in perfect condition. I opted to just leave this Donald cel "as is."

The "Gray" setup which I promply named "Bedraggled Donald" showed some common conditions seen in Art Corner cels. The penguin's paint had bled, which required the restoration artist to carefully refine the paint lines. Donald's paint was severely cracked and also had several points adhered to the Art board.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5v9Zl1vfvI/AAAAAAAAA_k/jUhtfPj9K5E/s400/CIMG5716.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159996414179114738" />
Unfortunately, the cel lost most of its original paint being separated from the art board, so it got a visit to the "Ink and Paint Spa" in Burbank, and received a meticulous makeover with exact color matching.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5v-kl1vfwI/AAAAAAAAA_s/slMFx-Lb5Dc/s400/restG5729.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5159997702669303554" />
The restoration was a great success. Here is the restored cel, placed on the original art board. You can see the adhered original paint left behind. The red arrows point out the staple holes, another clear sign of Art Corner provenance.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5wBxl1vfyI/AAAAAAAAA_8/Wk4qlwpNerA/s400/D_Duck2Rest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160001224542486306" />
Once the restorations were complete, it was time to design the setups.

I was able to get a DVD transfer of "AMERICA AND STEEL" and digitally re-created the key Master background for the restored Donald.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5wC3V1vfzI/AAAAAAAABAE/IkKfF6JA_Aw/s400/BG_Steel1a.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160002422838361906" />
The completed setup with restored cel and key master background looks like this:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5wEzV1vf0I/AAAAAAAABAM/ytCtjafZ1i8/s400/DonaldSteel_rest.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5160004553142140738" />
The other Donald I left as is. It later went to another collector.

I know you're wondering... how did the Penguins turn out?

One little guy was re-united with a perfectly key "Bert" and friends. He's the gray-bellied penguin far left. (Original cels rarely use white paint, as the intensely bright light used during cel photography would "flare." The gray color appears as white when photographed. This little guy is such a charmer!

The cel was released in the 1940s through the Courvoisier Gallery program. It has the official WDP stamp in the lower right corner (Walt Disney Productions).

As was the practice at the time, the cel is laminated.

As a later Courvoisier release, it has a typically uninspired background. The early Courvoisier backgrounds were actually created by artists at Disney Studios and were more elaborate. Later releases like this one were prepared by art students in the San Francisco area, where Courvoisier was located.

The original moment in the movie included Thumper's family and looked like this:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5RPePx2tvI/AAAAAAAAA8o/MkRRkBlRZoo/s400/ThumperCap.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157834854296368882" />
I digitally re-created the entire original pan background:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5RPuPx2twI/AAAAAAAAA8w/pN81OU3K9eA/s400/BG_Thumper.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157835129174275842" />
I'm not sure if or when I might change the setup to match the film. It is in the in best condition of all the SNOW WHITE cels I have ever seen. With the exception of residual tape marks on the outer edges, it is pristine. Most cels this old are very badly rippled and warped (the cel material shrinks with age). There is almost no rippling, just a tiny bit around the edges and no yellowing at all. The paint is original and flawless.

Also very unusual is the fact that this cel is untrimmed. Completely original and intact! (Note the registration holes at the bottom.)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5UIZPx2t0I/AAAAAAAAA9Q/MOHrZeaqaF8/s400/DocCel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158038178048161602" />
In the film, the strings are animated. Two strings have been inked on the cel, and there is just a touch of airbrushing which brings a rosy glow to Doc's cheeks. This leads me to believe that the cel was prepared for release through the Courvoisier Galleries, but was "liberated" just before the usual trimming and setup. As the cel is so perfect, my guess is that this was taped to a board and stored away for most of the last seventy years. Here's a scanned close-up of the Doc cel:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5UIvPx2t1I/AAAAAAAAA9Y/7jShTIy8HJI/s400/DOC_Scan.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158038556005283666" />
I digitally created the key master background. As usual, the B/G makes the piece. The cel is magnificent, but with the key B/G there's no doubt this is a monumental piece of historic Disney art.

I love this movie, and to add this particularly fine cel to my collection is a thrill and a half!

MICKEY Does a Fred Astaire!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5L3lvx2trI/AAAAAAAAA78/gpJA0pTFalk/s400/MICKEY_dancing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157456751145432754" />
I'm a baby boomer born just a bit too late for the debut of the original Mickey Mouse Club. However, encore performances (aka reruns) were going strong in the sixties, and I absolutely LOVED this show. Who wouldn't? Between Sunday nights and weekday afternoons, Disney TV with Walt defined my childhood. (Not to mention theatrical releases!)

Today's setup is the story of a truly classic piece of animation art: Mickey in one of his daily intros to the Mickey Mouse Club.

The original cel was released at Disneyland's Art Corner, trimmed and placed on a plain piece of powder blue art board. I acquired the cel in 2007. It needed minor restoration, as you can see, in these scans of both the Art Corner setup and the cel itself.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5LxVfx2tnI/AAAAAAAAA7c/mlAWsxNoPtE/s400/MICKEY_Strawhat.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157449874902791794" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5LxVvx2toI/AAAAAAAAA7k/1jkJlIeByyM/s400/Mickey3_before.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157449879197759106" />
With the restoration accomplished, the next step was to digitally re-create a key Master background.

The original moment of animation looked like this:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5Lzt_x2tpI/AAAAAAAAA7s/R1dyoRmxKiI/s400/MM3capSized.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157452494832842386" />
I was able to digitally re-create the key Master background with the honky-tonk piano. But the setup looked odd displayed this way, with Mickey floating in mid-air. As a piece of in-between animation, Mickey was jumping off the piano bench onto the stage. Great energy and style in the cel, but the re-created setup just looked odd to my eye, displayed as an art piece.

So I chose to use another digitally re-created background of the empty spotlit stage:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R5L1v_x2tqI/AAAAAAAAA70/9UJqOiqVCpo/s400/MMCstage.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157454728215836322" />
It's the very rare occasion that a related but non-key background does a better job of showcasing the art. The animators imbued Mickey with style and charisma, and I believe the familiar stage of the Mickey Mouse Club (uncluttered by the piano, with Mickey planted firmly in the spotlight) is the perfect presentation of this wonderful cel.

The finished setup is the image that begins this post. What a treasure! I have several pieces of art from the Mickey Mouse Club. This is my favorite. Ya gotta love Mickey!

SLEEPING BEAUTY (1959)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R37Q-Px2tJI/AAAAAAAAA3Y/ZZl6PUV1kOA/s400/SleepingBeautyStairs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151784791564530834" />
This SLEEPING BEAUTY setup (with production cel and key digitized master background) is an exact reproduction of one frame in the movie, when Prince Phillip and Princess Aurora descend the castle staircase.

Here is the precise moment in the film:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R37MiPx2tHI/AAAAAAAAA3E/yqMlhzp1Zyw/s400/sbcapp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151779912481682546" />
The cel is a "miniature" Art Corner piece (tiny figures with the cel trimmed to the extreme), originally released at Disneyland on a plain piece of light blue art board. Only a small point on Prince Phillip's chest had adhered. So the cel was carefully removed from the art board and the miniscule area with paint loss was professionally restored.

I was able to digitally reproduce the key master background, no small feat as the animated figures were descending the stairs during a zoom shot! The entire digitally recreated background looks like this:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R37M_Px2tII/AAAAAAAAA3M/LNeUHb-U0jY/s400/SB_30.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151780410697888898" />
(Of course the digitized background had to be cropped to match the trimmed cel.)

The end result is this exquisite setup.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_QdHn8FT7SdY/R37Q-Px2tJI/AAAAAAAAA3Y/ZZl6PUV1kOA/s400/SleepingBeautyStairs.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151784791564530834" />

The fact that that it is a "miniature" is a plus for me... it makes the delicacy of the fine hand-inked lines even more remarkable.

CHIPS and DALES!

Who doesn't love Chip and Dale? Chip, with his "chocolate chip" nose, and Dale with his red probiscus... their comic antics are amusing and endearing.

So I was delighted to add several Chip and Dale cels to my collection in 2007.

When two particular pieces arrived, I noticed the oddest thing: these Disneyland Art Corner setups were Chip and Chip, and Dale and Dale, double setups of the same character! Unusual setups from the Art Corner are never a surprise, and these, while rather careless were far from the most bizarre. (More on that in a future installment.)

I went through all the Chip and Dale cartoons available on DVD to no avail. My cel images were not in any of the cartoons. Fortunately, Kay from "Chip-n-Dale Online" and animator Brian Mitchell came to my rescue. They confirmed that these images were from a 1959 episode of Disneyland's Sunday night TV show called "THE ADVENTURES OF CHIP AND DALE."

While not available on DVD, edited versions (without Walt Disney's personalized introduction) have been released on VHS and laserdisc versions. So I was able to obtain this obscure source material and finally see the original show!

Included is a snappy Chip-N-Dale theme song by Disney composer (and former theatre organist) Oliver Wallace. Thanks to YouTube, you can enjoy the toe-tapping tune.

Animator Bill Justice directed. (This clever use of moving "real world" props and animation predated his work in MARY POPPINS by several years.)

Here are the cels as seen on screen, flanking the original Art Corner setups. This Holiday season has been crazy busy... so I haven't yet made a trip to the printer to have laserprint backgrounds made. I will simultaneously generate material for three animation blogs.

My career is in the entertainment world, as a professional musician.

However, my avocation is animation art, with a primary focus on vintage Disney productions. I've been collecting for more than a decade. And my interest is far from casual. I've read (and own) nearly every book on animation art. I continue to be amazed by the miracle of drawings that move.

I started digitally re-creating background art for cel setups for my animation art collection. I was enthralled with the style and charisma of the background art, and decided to share it via my ANIMATION BACKGROUNDS blog.

Recently, I've been considering how to best share research I've done, and images of my digital background re-creations as well as my final cel setups.

So here's what I've come up with!

ANIMATION BACKGROUNDS will continue to focus on classic animation background art. My goal is to post daily, as my time permits.

NAME THIS TOON began and will continue as the place I'll share unknown cels from my collection, with hopes of identifying them, with your help! My goal will be posts once or twice a week.

In particular, vintage cels sold at Disneyland's Art Corner around 1960 often have unusual combinations of familiar characters. Artwork from early Disney TV (Mickey Mouse Club, Wonderful World Of Color and educational shorts) are often the most difficult to identify.

Your assistance is MUCH appreciated! Your comments will help me catalog my artwork for future animation enthusiasts. Please comment... even an educated guess will be welcome.

Once research is completed, the final setups will be posted on a brand new blog: CELS AND SETUPS. Initially, my goal will be to post once a week.

This will be of special interest to animation art collectors. It is here that I will show the entire process of acquiring a cel, having it restored, researching and creating a master key background, and then the final finished setups (cels with their digitally re-created key master background).

I hope you'll enjoy my efforts. Animation art is a joy, a passion... and what is better than sharing that joy with others?

Happy New Year!
